Torque & Horsepower by Dennis J. Quitoni

If I placed my hands on your shouders and tried to twist you around but you resisted, the force I exert on your body to make you turn is torque.

The length of time that I continue to exert this force upon your shoulders to make you twist is how we measure horsepower.

That's the easiest way I can think of to explain the difference. Here is another explanation;
Lift 200lbs. [resistance] over your head, lets say 6ft. [distance] we'll call that work accomplished. [energy]

Lets state that as 6ft.X200lbs....or, 1200foot pounds of work accomplished. torque equals distance times resistance. Measuring torque tells us how much has been accomplished, but not how fast. Thats what horsepower is about. If it takes 10 seconds to lift that 200lbs. 6ft. that time is the power you exerted. If it takes 5 seconds to lift that 200lbs. that same distance, then you have exerted twice the power. We express this as horsepower.

Why, you ask!

Well, a long time ago a man named James Watt watched a horse pull a weighted lever attached to a pump as it walked in a circle. One horse, one same size circle, so much work completed in a given amount of time.and so he came up with this...Horsepower is the amount of power it takes to perform 33,000ft. lbs. of work in one minute. or, HP=DxF divided by 33,000 x t

D---is distance in feet that the weight is moved
F---is the force in pounds required to move the weight
T---is the time needed to move the weight

33,000 is one horsepower for one minute

Move the weight [F] through a distance [D] and divide it by one horsepower [33,000] multiplied by the time [T] it takes and you get the horsepower produced.

As applied to a motor: To produce more torque, you need to understand that increases in torque come about by a combination of cylinder size [bore & stroke], how much air and fuel we can put into that size, and how thoroughly we can burn and remove the mixture. [volumetric efficiency] Power comes from the efficient use of what is stated above.
